Village Walk – The Beginning of a New and Exciting Tarzana

Tarzana’s downtown is at the beginning of a revitalization with the construction of Village Walk- a project that will be comprised of upscale retail stores & restaurants plus luxury townhouses and condos.

In 2003, a local developer purchased the Village Walk property, formerly known as the Brown Center. Before any plans were drawn up, he came to the Tarzana Improvement Association to ask for their ideas and recommendations for this property. Kathy Delle Donne, board member of the Tarzana Improvement Association notified Tarzana’s other organizations and local residents and invited them to participate. He also presented both the first and second phases of the project before the Tarzana Neighborhood Council and the Tarzana Property Owners Association.

Everyone was excited that this developer wanted to build an outstanding project in Tarzana. Normally, the City requires a fee to Cultural Arts Department for new projects. Instead of paying this required fee to the Cultural Affairs Dept., the developer chose to find an artist to design a unique piece of art for Tarzana. This rarely happens on new projects. Developers find it’s not worth the time, money or effort to do this. As you see in the photo, he located an artist to design a mural for the inside of the fountain directly in front of the building. Another fountain with a mural depicting Jane will be included in the second phase.

This first phase of Village Walk, which is almost completed, will be open by the end of the year. This second phase will include more stores and restaurants and luxury townhouses and condos. Whole Foods will occupy the major portion of this next phase. The second phase will start at the end of the year.
